Connect your MIDI keyboard

How to connect a MIDI keyboard or digital piano to midipiano.app by USB or Bluetooth: which browsers work, iPhone, iPad and Mac, playing without a keyboard, keys that light up and what to check if it does not appear.

How to connect it

Plug your keyboard or digital piano into the computer, phone or tablet by USB, or connect it over Bluetooth, and open the MIDI tab. A keyboard that only has a five-pin MIDI output needs a MIDI to USB interface, and one with a USB port connects directly. Press Enable MIDI and accept the permission the browser asks for, then choose your keyboard as the input and where the sound comes out: the browser's own audio or your keyboard. Then go to Exercises or Practice and play.

Which browsers work

Use a browser with Web MIDI, such as Chrome, Edge or Opera. Firefox on a computer works too: the first time you enable MIDI with the keyboard connected, it asks you to install a small Mozilla permission add-on, which is normal, safe and only happens once. Firefox on Android has no MIDI, so use Chrome there.

iPhone, iPad and Mac

The browsers on iPhone and iPad (Safari, Chrome, Edge and the rest) cannot connect to MIDI keyboards. Our recommendation is MIDIWeb Browser, a free browser with MIDI support: open it and go to midipiano.app. Safari on the Mac cannot either: use Chrome, Edge or Firefox, or MIDIWeb Browser, which is also available for macOS.

Without a keyboard

You can still play. Press Enable MIDI, then choose Web browser (virtual keyboard) as the input and play the keyboard on screen with the mouse or by touch, with the sound coming from the browser. You can connect a MIDI keyboard whenever you want.

Keys that light up

If your keyboard has lights on its keys, the app can light up the notes you have to play. In the MIDI tab, turn on Lights and choose the manufacturer or model from the list below. The generic mode sends standard MIDI notes, and if your keyboard does not react, the auto scan finds the channel it listens on. On Casio keyboards, turn on MIDI In Navigate on the keyboard first.

If your keyboard does not appear

Check that it is switched on and connected with a USB cable that carries data, then press Rescan devices. Firefox denies access without asking when it cannot see any MIDI device: connect the keyboard, reload the page and enable MIDI again. And if the keyboard stops responding after the screen turns off, the app offers to reactivate it.

Frequently asked questions

Will my keyboard work with midipiano.app?

If it sends MIDI over USB or Bluetooth, yes: any MIDI-compatible keyboard or digital piano works, and most modern ones are. All you need is a browser with Web MIDI on the computer, phone or tablet.

Can I use it on an iPad?

Yes, with MIDIWeb Browser, a free browser with MIDI support, because Safari, Chrome and the other browsers on iPhone and iPad cannot connect to MIDI keyboards. Open midipiano.app in MIDIWeb Browser and enable MIDI as you would anywhere else.

Why does my keyboard not show up?

The usual causes are a keyboard that is switched off, a USB cable that does not carry data, or a browser without Web MIDI, such as Safari. Check those, press Rescan devices in the MIDI tab and, in Firefox, reload the page and enable MIDI again.

Do I need a MIDI interface?

Only if your keyboard has nothing but a five-pin MIDI output: a keyboard like that needs a MIDI to USB interface, and one with a USB port connects directly. Plug it straight into the computer, phone or tablet, or connect it over Bluetooth MIDI, and it appears in the MIDI tab.
